All productions are currently under negotiation on AEA Independent Theatre Contract (ITC).
Current minimum weekly salaries:
Actor: $565.00
Stage Manager: $679.00
Assistant Stage Manager: $601.00
Health: $186/week
Pension: 8%
All rehearsals will be held on the campus of The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts in downtown Worcester, MA. All performances will take place in the BrickBox Theater at the Jean McDonough Arts Center, capacity 175-200. Learn more at JMACWorcester.org/BrickBox.
Limited out-of-town housing is available, and actors from out-of-town are encouraged to audition.

Romeo + Juliet

Director’s Note: The script has been cut / adapted for 16-18 roles. No doubling. All actors may be involved in ensemble-driven storytelling. All actors may be involved in a high energy dance number; however, formal dance or movement training is not required.

HOUSE MONTAGUE
ROMEO. Male presenting / masc / non-binary; 18+ to play teens; any ethnicity. Emo, romantic, impossibly cool. Must have superior command of heightened language. This role requires intimacy, including kissing and partial nudity, as well as stage combat.
BENVOLIO. Any gender; 18+ to play teens; any ethnicity. Romeo’s cousin and friend. A gentle soul. Must have superior command of heightened language. This role requires stage combat.
BALTHASAR. Male presenting / masc / non-binary; 18+ to play teens – 20s; any ethnicity. Romeo’s page / bodyguard. The muscle of the group. This role requires stage combat.
MONTAGUE. Male presenting; 40s+; any ethnicity. Romeo’s father. LADY MONTAGUE. Female presenting; 40s+; any ethnicity. Romeo’s mother.
HOUSE CAPULET
JULIET. Female presenting; 18+ to play teens; any ethnicity. Complex, intrepid. Must have superior command of heightened language. This role requires intimacy, including kissing and partial nudity.
TYBALT. Male presenting; 20s; any ethnicity. Juliet’s hot-headed cousin. This role requires stage combat.
PETER. Male presenting; 30s – 50s+; any ethnicity. House Capulet’s loyal if bumbling serving man. Provides comic relief throughout.
LADY CAPULET. This role is CAST. Actors will be considered for understudy/emergency replacement. Female presenting; 40s+; any ethnicity. An amalgamation of Shakespeare’s Capulet and Lady Capulet. Played as a widow and therefore Juliet’s only living parent. Must have superior command of heightened language.
NURSE. This role is CAST. Actors will be considered for understudy/emergency replacement. Female presenting; 40s+; any ethnicity. Around the same age as Lady Capulet, but softer and much less refined. Provides comic relief throughout.
OTHER PLAYERS
MERCUTIO. Male presenting / masc / non-binary; 18+ to play late teens – early 20s; any ethnicity. Romeo’s most fabulous friend and kinsman to Queen Escalus. Must have superior command of heightened language. This role requires stage combat.
FRIAR LAWRENCE. This role is CAST. Actors will be considered for understudy/emergency replacement. Male presenting; 30s+; any ethnicity. He gives “cool youth pastor,” like your favorite Sex Ed teacher who leaves condoms outside his door “just in case.” Must have superior command of heightened language.
QUEEN ESCALUS. Female presenting; 30s – 60s+; any ethnicity. High status, diplomatic, fair but firm. Must have superior command of heightened language.
COUNTY PARIS. Male presenting; early 20s; any ethnicity. Lady Capulet’s preferred suitor for Juliet. Perfectly fine, but no Romeo. This role requires stage combat.
APOTHECARY / ENESMBLE. Any gender; any age; any ethnicity. Seeking an actor skilled with slight-of-hand / magic.

Breakdown:
HEDWIG. Character pronouns she/her; genderqueer/genderfluid; 30s–60s; any ethnicity. Charismatic, with a razor wit and a wounded heart. Equal parts glam icon, stand-up comic, and tragic heroine. Must be an exceptional rock vocalist with strong storytelling chops and the stamina to carry the show. Skill with dialect and ability to play an instrument are pluses but not required.
YITZHAK. Any gender identity; 20s – 40s; any ethnicity. Hedwig’s partner and backup singer. Quiet but deeply expressive beneath a guarded exterior. A gifted vocalist. Ability to play lead/rhythm guitar a plus but not required.
THE ANGRY INCH BAND. Any gender identities; 20s–60s+; any ethnicities. Seeking musicians who act or have experience in theatrical productions. If you are an actor who plays keyboard, lead guitar, bass guitar, and/or drums, please let us know and be prepared to play your instrument if possible.

PREPARATION
- Please prepare a monologue no longer than 60-seconds.
- If you wish to be considered for Romeo + Juliet, please choose a Shakespeare monologue.
- If you wish to be considered for Hedwig, please be prepared to sing sixteen bars in addition to your monologue. An accompanist will be provided.
- If you are an actor who plays an instrument and wish to be considered for the band in Hedwig, please let us know and be prepared to play your instrument, if possible.
- Please bring two copies of your headshot and resume, stapled together.
