2023-2024 Letting Off STEAM: Arts Integration Workshops

The Hanover Theatre Conservatory is proud to offer STEAM workshop field trip opportunities for the 2023-2024 school year!

Our STEAM and arts integration workshops aim to elevate school curriculum by giving students and teachers the chance to experience it kinesthetically, through the arts and real-world application. Taught by a professional theatre or dance teaching artist and created in tandem with a MA licensed teacher, these workshops are aligned with CCSS and MA state standards and are a great way to help differentiate classroom learning. Scroll down to see workshops for all age levels!

Workshops are $450 each and can accommodate up to 30 students each.

MATH IN CHOREOGRAPHY AND DANCE

MATH IN CHOREOGRAPHY AND DANCE
Recommended Grades: Grades K-2 | Grades 3-5 | Grades 5-7 | Grades 8-12
Explore the connection between dance and math! In these workshops, students will use mathematical concepts as they become choreographers of their own dance! Students will learn the math that a choreographer uses in order to create different dances and will apply that knowledge to create a dance from scratch with their peers.
Topics Covered:
Grades K-2: Shapes, Counting, Height
Grades 3-5: Symmetry, Angles, Lines, Fractions
Grades 5-7: Coordinate Plane
Grades 8-12: Congruence, Similarity, Transformations

LIGHTS UP WITH SHADOW PUPPETS!

LIGHTS UP WITH SHADOW PUPPETS!
Recommended Grades: Grades K-2 | Grades 3-6
Discover the phenomenon of shadow puppet shows! How does it work and how it is done? Students will explore the properties of light and how it interacts with various materials. Using that knowledge and past learnings of various organisms and their systems, students will create shadow puppets for a story of their creation to share with the class!
Topics Covered:
Grades K-2: Light, Shadow and Parts of the Body
Grades 3-6: Light, Energy, and the Skeletal System

STAGE LIGHTING STEM

STAGE LIGHTING STEM
Recommended Grades: Grades 3-5 | Grades 5-8 | Grades 9-12
Come learn what lighting designers need to take into account when they design for the stage! Dependent on grade level, students will look at the different elements needed to create a successful design, from how circuits and equipment works to how math is involved in selecting correct fixtures and how it all comes together.
Topics Covered:
Grades 3-5: Energy and Circuits
Grades 5-8: Material Engineering, Waves, Energy, Reading Graphs, Angles
Grades 9-12: Circuits, Energy Conversion, Trigonometry

THE MATH BEHIND SCENIC DESIGN

THE MATH BEHIND SCENIC DESIGN
Recommended Grades: Grades 6-8 | Grades 9-12
Discover how scenic designers use geometry to create a set for the stage! Students will learn about the elements of design, how they relate to math, and how scenic designers bring their art to reality. Using a text from ELA class, students will use their knowledge to create a set design for a scene in the novel. Students will experience scale drawing and figure out what materials they need in order for a shop to build their design.
Topics Covered:
Grades 6-8: Area, Surface Area, Scale, Proportions, Congruence, Engineering Design, Tools and Manufacturing
Grades 9-12: Engineering Design, Transformations, Congruence, 2D and 3D Relationships, Geometry in Design

NAVIGATING THE DRAMA OF HUMAN IMPACT

NAVIGATING THE DRAMA OF HUMAN IMPACT
Recommended Grades: Grades 3-5 | Grades 6-8 | Grades 9-12
Based off the children’s story Two Islands by Ivan Gantschev, students will be immersed in an interactive story that looks at how two different groups of people with different mindsets impact the environment and the societal consequences of those actions. Students will be guided through the story and will have to decide how their group will proceed as multiple challenges and conflicts come their way!
Topics Covered:
Grades 3-5: Map Skills and Human Impact on the Environment, Social Emotional Learning
Grades 6-8: Map Skills, Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens, Human Impact on the Environment
Grades 9-12: Map Skills, Immigration, Industrialization, Colonization, Human Impact on the Environment
