RESIDENCY OVERVIEW
Over the course of a dedicated four-week residency with The Hanover Theatre Rep in Worcester, MA, Broadway playwright Jamie Wax will spend three weeks drafting, shaping and refining a new play with focused artistic time and access to the theatre’s creative resources. In the fourth and final week, Wax will shift from page to stage, joining five actors and director Livy Scanlon as the script is brought to life and rehearsed for a pair of staged readings in the BrickBox Theater. This residency blends concentrated writing time with a live, collaborative rehearsal and presentation process, giving Wax the opportunity to see his work materialize in performance as part of THT Rep’s commitment to fostering new voices and developing new work.
PLAY SYNOPSIS
In 1963, three “high risk” expectant mothers and two overworked nurses find themselves in the maternity wing of a newly integrated Louisiana hospital. As the nation reels from JFK’s assassination and the hospital’s orderlies unionize and strike, these five very different women are thrown into an intimate pressure cooker.
Facing fear, uncertainty and a world in rapid transition, they lean on one another’s humor, heart, and resilience—forming bonds and sharing moments that will change their lives forever.
