Celebrating 100 Years of Loew’s Poli Palace on the Mighty Wurlitzer with Dr. Kleefield

Resident organist, Dr. Jonathan Kleefield returns to the main stage with a new concert!

Our magnificent historic theatre turns 100 years old on this day, and to celebrate Dr. Jonathan Kleefield, the theatre’s resident organist, will play a potpourri of music to commemorate this milestone.

The great American songbook was in full swing when the Poli theater opened in 1926. Moreover, talking pictures debuted the following year, creating a whole new kind of entertainment that benefitted greatly by its inclusion of music. Therefore, selections representing each decade, beginning in 1926,  will draw from both sources. As always, Dr. Kleefield will provide extensive commentary relating both to the songs chosen and the theater’s history. 

The Mighty Wurlitzer, assembled and gifted to the theatre by Donald Phipps, is recognized as one of the cultural jewels of Worcester. Phipps, Kleefield and the Mighty Wurlitzer were recently highlighted on WGBH’s, The Culture Show. As a board director of the Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, Phipps followed in the footsteps of our theatre’s founders, with his vision of restoring a treasured piece of our heritage and culture.
