The Temptations were originally known as two bands, The Primes and The Distants. They became The Temptations in 1960. The Primes had a sister band, The Primettes, who later became another Motown legend, The Supremes.

2. Paving the way

The Temptations were the first Motown act to win a Grammy® Award. They were nominated for a total of nine Grammy® Awards, winning four, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

3. A unique sound

Levi Stubbs was The Four Tops lead vocalist. He was a baritone, which was rare, as the lead was usually a tenor.

4. Decades of chart toppers

The Temptations have nearly 100 R&B records that were on the charts, including 43 Top 10 hits between the 1960’s and 1990’s. After their first hit, “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch),” in 1965, The Four Tops went on to be one of the biggest American bands in the 1960’s, second only to The Temptations.

5. Music legends

With 24 Top 40 pop hits to their credit, The Four Tops were inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990. The Temptations were also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
