Adult classes

At The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for the Performing Arts, we believe education is a lifelong pursuit.  We offer a variety of classes for adults in areas of acting and theatre, technical theatre and design, dance and music. 

Winter/Spring registration opens November 23!


ADULT ACTING AND THEATRE

Adult Acting I (Ages 18+)

A course allowing adult theatre enthusiasts to explore acting exercises, as well as comedic and dramatic scene work. You’re never too old to step into the spotlight!
 
Schedule: One 90 min. class/week

Adult Acting II (Ages 18+)
Prerequisite: Adult Acting I or permission from instructor

This intermediate level class allows adults to delve into scene and monologue work to build upon the foundation built in Acting I.

Schedule: One 90 min. class/week

Adult Improv (Ages 18+)

Explore laugh-filled exercises and skill-driven games in a mature setting. Structured, simple play guides each improviser to experience individual success, discover the joy of ensemble support and build the foundation for successful improvisation. Discover key concepts such as “yes, and,” collaboration, commitment, communication, relationship building and truth in comedy.

Playing Shakespeare (Teens and Adults)

Have you ever been interested in Shakespeare, but thought it was too hard, too old or too boring? Do you need to prepare a Shakespearean monologue for auditions? This is the class for you! Full of high intensity games and fun physical activities, this class takes Shakespeare's language out of the musty classroom and puts it onto its feet. Students engage physically, vocally and imaginatively with the text, kicking Shakespeare off his pedestal! Emphasis will be placed on language, physicality and fun, leaving the boring stuff at the door.

ADULT TECHNICAL THEATRE AND DESIGN

Sound Design I (Teens and Adults)

The course is a beginner’s introduction to audio, intended for the novice who wishes to learn basic audio terminology, functionality of component, design, set up and operation of a basic sound system. iPad required for this class. 
 
Schedule: One 90 min. class/week

Lighting I (Teens and Adults)

Students are introduced to the vast array of lighting instruments available today and the role each type of fixture plays in entertainment lighting.  Atmospheric effects, fixture accessories and expendables (gels and patterns) will also be explored in how they can augment the use of the lighting element.  Dimming, control and safety protocols for hang and focus will also be reviewed. Students must bring an eight-inch Adjustable (Crescent) Wrench to class.

ADULT DANCE

Adult Ballet Beginner I (Ages 18+)

This 90 minute class is designed to provide adults an environment where they can learn formal classical training from the absolute beginner level. Participants will be introduced to body placement/alignment, French vocabulary, barre, center and diagonal work. Technical components will be taught in a pace that is easy to comprehend, apply and execute.
 
Schedule: One 90 min. class/week

Adult Ballet Beginner II (Ages 18+)

Adult Ballet: Intermediate/Advanced (Ages 18+)

This 90 min. class is designed for a moderate paced class, designed to emphasize balance, coordination and connection between movements. Advancements on technical skills, French vocabulary, barre, center and diagonal work will be an area of concentration. The class is offered to adults with basic or intermediate experience.
 
Schedule: One 90 min. class/week

Adult Tap Beginner I (Adults, 18+)

Whether you’re a beginner or just want to brush up on your skills, this fun and vibrant class is for you. Tap is an exciting and challenging art form that developed out of African polyrhythms in America’s Jazz Age. Elements of classic and Broadway-style tap will be taught. The form’s musicality and rich percussive traditions are emphasized through fundamental skills and increasingly intricate progressions. Tap shoes required.
 
Schedule: One 60 min. class/week

Times: Wednesdays 11 AM – 12 PM OR Wednesdays 7 PM – 8 PM
Dates: September 12 – December 19 (15 Weeks)

West African Dance (Teens and Adults)

Students will get the opportunity to move their bodies to the fun and high energy music of West Africa. They will learn principles of rhythm, fundamental movements, and the ancient stories behind the traditional dances and rhythms of Mali. Every class will be accompanied by live drums!

ADULT MUSIC

West African Drumming (Teens and Adults)
 
Presented by Crocodile River Music, experience African culture through music! Master Drummer and West African native, Issa Coulibaly, leads our hands-on drumming class. Authentic instruments are provided to students for classroom use.

PRIVATE VOCAL LESSONS

Singing is a complex art form that requires consistent training and exercise of your instrument.  Private lessons provide technique instruction and individualized training for your specific needs.
