REGISTRATION FOR FALL CLASSES NOW OPEN!

We are dedicated to providing high-quality, pre-professional and recreational training and instruction. We ensure small classroom size so that each student can accomplish goals both individually and collectively.

We offer 32-week dance programs September - May for ages three through adult. If you are interested in joining one of these programs mid-year, please contact Jennifer Agbay, director of dance, at 508.471.1794 for an evaluation. For adult classes in dance offered in winter/spring 2018, please visit the adult offerings page. *Please note, you will notice an asterisk following some class titles.  This indicates that a faculty-supervised evaluation is required for new students ages 7+.  Please make arrangements with Jennifer Agbay, director of dance, before registering.  Call 508.471.1794 to schedule a class placement audition.


BALLET PROGRAMS

Pre-School Dance (Ages 3-4)

An introduction to dance for girls and boys. A fun, creative class where students learn to move with the music and enrich their coordination and listening skills. Children will learn basic postures, positions and spatial structures. Props will also be introduced to help enrich the child’s expressive movement. 
 
Schedule: One 45 min. class/week

Creative Movement (Ages 5-6)

Created for future dancers, this class focuses on body, space, force and time in order to further develop movements, musical awareness and creative expression. It will develop a child’s coordination, flexibility, musicality and listening skills, while the students are having fun. Creative materials such as hoops, balls, hats and scarves will be utilized to enhance a child’s creativity.
 
Schedule: One 45 min. class/week

Pre-Ballet (Ages 7-8)*

Developed for more mature children, we will intensify the use of different levels of space, rhythm and qualities in movement. We begin to work on skills used to create and remember dances for performance. Stretch/flexibility exercises introduce movement patterns of classical ballet steps and basic ballet technique. Creative materials and fun activities will still be part of the class.

Primary Ballet I (Ages 9-10)*

The children are introduced to classical ballet technique. Elementary barre exercises with emphasis on correct posture, introduction to center and diagonal movements. Intensified work on strength and flexibility.

Primary Ballet II (Ages 10-11)*

This class focuses on further development of control and balance with increased theory, including complete positions of the body. Barre, center work and introduction to diagonal combinations.

Pre-Pointe (Recommended for Primary 2 and up)*

This class is designed to concentrate on preparing students for pointe work. In this 30 minute class, students will practice barre exercises, use thera-bands and other props to help achieve flexibility in their feet as well as, strengthening their ankles and legs.

Primary Ballet III (Ages 12-13)*

The focus of this class is intense development of body awareness and special awareness in combination with control and balance of the body, in the standard ballet stance. Increased knowledge of vocabulary and theory are taught, including complete positions of the body. Barre, center work and diagonal combinations are longer and more complex in this level. Epaulmente and coordination of the arms are introduced.

Pas De Deux (Ages 14+)*

French for “step of two,” it is a set dance for both male and female ballet dancers. During this class, male and female dancers will learn the art of ballet partnering through refining their ballet technique, increasing core strength, learning weight transfer/balance, nuanced coordinated movements, as well as stressing cooperation and trust. Dancers will begin with basic skills and progress to more challenging combinations. This training is specifically helpful for dancers who are pursuing professional careers.

Ballet Level A (Ages 13-14)*

Training intensifies with further study of the coordination and connection between movements. Barre, center work and diagonal combinations.

Ballet Level B (Ages 14-15)*

From this level forward, the plasticity, coordination and connection of movements of the arms, legs, feet, head and body are the primary developmental goal. For those deemed ready, a pointe class is added twice a week.

Ballet Level C (Ages 15+)*

Emphasis placed on greater stability and complexity in the study of positions, adagio, jumps, turns and more. Greater development of strength, flexibility and quality of the movement.

Beginner Pointe I*

This class begins pointe work from the very beginning. Each student will learn the essences of the three quarter pointe and how it is vital to strong, safe, articulate training. Students will learn how to manage their posture and turnout which are major components to the training and education of pointe work. Students must be deemed ready for pointe work through an evaluation and recommendation of instructor/dance director.

Beginner Pointe II*

This class is designed to help strengthen and secure all beginner pointe work plus challenge students in pace, music tempo and longer combinations. Newer technical elements will be added, as well as weight transfer to one leg/one leg balances. The class remains committed to safety, proper posture and the essence of the three quarter pointe training.

Boys Class (Ages 8+)

Finally a class created for BOYS ONLY! This class, taught by our professional male instructor, will give 75 minutes of training in classical ballet in an athletic, building way. Gain muscle, strength, endurance, agility and learn to jump higher than before! This class will also teach you classical vocabulary and terminology to heighten your experience and education.

Teen Beginner Ballet I (Ages 12-18)

This class is designed to provide beginner to intermediate training and education to adolescents that are interested in the fundamentals of classical ballet. Introduction to ballet terminology, ballet barre exercises, center work and ballet combinations from the diagonal are included in this beginner class.

Teen Beginner Ballet II (Ages 12-18)*

This 90 min. class is designed for a moderate paced class, designed to emphasize balance, coordination and connection between movements. Advancements on technical skills, French vocabulary, barre, center and diagonal work will be an area of concentration. The class is offered to adults with basic or intermediate experience.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES

Adult Tap Beginner I (Adults, 18+)

Students progress in classic and Broadway-style tap while advancing their fundamental skills and learning increasingly intricate progressions. Tap shoes required.

Whether you’re a beginner or just want to brush up on your skills, this fun and vibrant class is for you. Tap is an exciting and challenging art form that developed out of African polyrhythms in America’s Jazz Age. Elements of classic and Broadway-style tap will be taught. The form’s musicality and rich percussive traditions are emphasized through fundamental skills and increasingly intricate progressions. Tap shoes required.

Ballet Clinic

This 30 minute clinic for the first ten weeks of the fall semester will provide extra training, information and application to certain technical elements (i.e. ports de bras, petite allegro, flexibility, etc). The age recommendation is 10 years old to adult or Primary 2 to Level D. Area students from other schools are welcome to participate in this clinic! Outside students cast in The Nutcracker will be required to take this class.

Character Dance

Students will be introduced to storytelling through dance and develop basic acting skills to enhance their performances. A specific subdivision of classical dance, character dance is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theater. Character dance is integral to much of the classical ballet repertoire and helps students to develop trust and confidence in partnering work.

Contemporary (Advanced Ages 14+)*

The study of current composition and improvisation further develop the dancer’s choreographic creativity and imagination. Students must have prior experience in modern technique.

Dance Improvisation

Dance improvisation is the process of spontaneously creating movement. Development of improvised movement material is facilitated through a variety of creative explorations including body mapping through levels, shape and dynamic structure.  Dancers can move freely and organically in a space that is supported and nurtured.

Jazz I (Ages 8-10)*

This class introduces students to the basic concepts, techniques and styles of jazz dance. Students will learn basic vocabulary and a warm-up specific to jazz technique, along with stretching and conditioning. Simple jazz progressions across the floor and combinations allow students to experience this stylized way of dancing. No prior knowledge/experience is required for this class.

Jazz II (Ages 10-13)*

This free form/style of dance allows the body to move in very expressive ways. This class is designed to introduce students to dance and expression without boundaries and will explore techniques of the great Modern Dance masters.

Musical Theatre Dance

This class is designed for theatre students to learn a combination of musical theatre dance, jazz, and Broadway styles. In the performing business, auditions are your tests, and dance classes are where you study. Weekly dance combinations help to prepare students for picking up and executing choreography for “triple threat” status.

Stretch and Strength (Primary Levels 2+)*

This 30 minute class focuses on flexibility for many aspects of the body, turnout, splits, hamstrings and back. Conditioning the body to obtain stronger core, back muscles, height in extension is a perfect complement for dancers and athletes.

West African Dance (Teens and Adults)

Students will get the opportunity to move their bodies to the fun and high energy music of West Africa. They will learn principles of rhythm, fundamental movements, and the ancient stories behind the traditional dances and rhythms of Mali. Every class will be accompanied by live drums!

YAGP Competition Prep (Invitation Only)

The Youth America Grande Prix (YAGP) is an elite, international Ballet and Contemporary competition. Students are selected and trained by the artistic staff to prepare for this unique opportunity. This class is limited and requires regularly scheduled private sessions with coach/choreographer.
